The Real Reason We Don't Take Insurance

"Do you take insurance?"

The short answer is no.

And that decision is one of the best things we've done for our patients. Insurance serves an important purpose. We just believe your recovery deserves more than a timeline, a billing code, or a predetermined number of visits.

The Real Reason We Don't Take Insurance | Fortis PT and Pelvic Health Resource Blog

Why Would a Physical Therapy Practice Choose Not To?

It comes down to providing better care. Most healthcare providers don't always get to decide what's best for a patient. Insurance companies ultimately determine how many visits are approved, how long treatment lasts, what's covered, and when progress is supposed to happen. Recovery doesn't follow a schedule like that. Healing isn't a timeline, and people aren't billing codes.

That's why I built Fortis differently.

Why Insurance and Personalized Care Don't Always Mix

Insurance companies are designed to manage costs. We're designed to help people heal. Sometimes those goals line up, and sometimes they don't. Many providers have to work within systems that prioritize efficiency, productivity, and reimbursement requirements, which often means shorter appointments, limited visits, standardized care plans, more patients seen in less time, and less opportunity to dig into the underlying cause. I worked in settings like that before starting Fortis, and I watched productivity standards get in the way of care. Patients often leave feeling like they got treatment for their symptoms but never really found answers. To be honest, I got sick and tired of the patient not being the number one focus.

Imagine hiring a personal trainer and your insurance company decides how many sessions you get, how long each one lasts, which exercises are allowed, and when you're supposed to be better. Then, when you’re not better on their timeline, they just say, “well, you’ve reached max potential, so we’re going to deny any future visits.” Sounds ridiculous, right? Yet that's often how healthcare works, and patients are the ones caught in the middle.

Why We Chose an Out-of-Network Model

When I started Fortis, I asked myself a simple question: what kind of care would I want my own family to receive? I had watched people I love struggle with problems that were common but treatable, and I knew what I'd want for them. The answer was personalized, focused, one-on-one care, so that's what we built.

Every session is with me directly, with no aides and no handoffs. Our model lets us focus entirely on you.

What Personalized Physical Therapy Actually Means

Personalized care sounds great, but what does it actually look like? It means your treatment plan is built around your goals, symptoms, movement patterns, and lifestyle. We have room to ask deeper questions and spend more time finding the contributing factors. Your treatment is determined by what you need.

In practice, that looks like one-on-one sessions, individualized care plans, a 75-minute evaluation, advanced pelvic health assessment, hands-on treatment when appropriate, movement analysis, ongoing education and support, and progression that follows your goals. Every patient is different, and every recovery should be too. It also means that we create a plan that works for you, your schedule, your budget, your life.

Why Root Cause Matters

Imagine your check engine light comes on and you put a piece of tape over it. The light disappears, and the problem is still under the hood. That's what symptom-based care can feel like, where the goal becomes making the symptom less noticeable.

At Fortis, we want to know why you're leaking, why your back hurts, why exercise makes symptoms worse, and why previous treatments haven't worked. Those answers lead to better outcomes than managing symptoms alone.

Greenville Patients Deserve Answers

So many women who find us have already been told their symptoms are normal, or sent home with a handout of exercises and no real explanation. They're looking for a provider who listens, has time to ask questions, and has the freedom to focus entirely on their care. That's what we're here for.

The Bottom Line

We chose an out-of-network model because it lets us provide the highest level of care possible. That means more time with each patient, personalized treatment, a focus on root causes, and outcomes ahead of restrictions. It also lets us do what we love most, helping people move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing the things they love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't Fortis Physical Therapy accept insurance?

We operate outside traditional insurance networks so we can provide personalized care without being limited by visit caps, reimbursement requirements, productivity quotas, or treatment restrictions that may not align with a patient's needs.

Is out-of-network physical therapy worth it?

Many patients find value in longer appointments, individualized treatment plans, one-on-one care, and a deeper focus on identifying and addressing the root cause of symptoms. Sometimes it actually costs less than in-network care, especially with high deductibles and per-visit copays. There is 100% transparency, which allows you to better plan what works for you.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes! Many patients use HSA or FSA funds for physical therapy services. We will also give a superbill that may or may not be reimbursed in part or in full by your insurance, but we recommend checking with your benefits provider for eligibility requirements and OON benefits.

Do you specialize in pelvic floor physical therapy in Greenville, SC?

Yes! We provide specialized pelvic floor physical therapy for urinary leakage, pelvic pain, pregnancy-related discomfort, postpartum recovery, pain with sex, core dysfunction, and other pelvic health concerns.

Do you only treat pelvic floor conditions?

Nope! In addition to pelvic health, we help patients with orthopedic injuries, back pain, hip pain, movement dysfunction, chronic pain, athletic injuries, and performance-related goals. We also offer remote performance coaching for individuals who don’t need injury rehab-driven care but have goals of improving their health and wellness and fitness.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first appointment is a 75-minute evaluation that includes a discussion of your goals and concerns, a movement assessment both lying down and standing, and a personalized treatment plan built together. Any pelvic exam, if applicable, is done to whatever level of comfort you want. After that we have 60-minute sessions to get you from your starting point to your goals and beyond.
